The song "TOI ET MOI" sung by OLIVIER DURET seems to be one of the favorites of many on the just released T-VICE cd "Welcome to Haiti". Kompa Magazine caught up with OLIVIER to get the REAL STORY behind the song.
_________________________________________________________

KOMPA MAGAZINE: OLIVIER, can you give us the history of your song "TOI ET MOI" and how it came about? Is it a true story; or should we say that it has been something that you've personally experienced?

*What advice do you have for people/fans that might be in the same situation that you are describing in the song?

OLIVIER DURET: Well, I personally think that EVERYONE at least once in their life went through this similar situation. sometimes its the parents and friends hyping up a relationship which NEEDS to be over with and sometimes, as in this case, its them trying to put an end to one. i chose the ladder because i thought it would be more of a positive message.

Powersurge was at my house one day, working on something with Mikaben and I asked if he had anything I might be interested in, and he said try this beat... as soon as i heard it, the melody of the chorus came to my head, so i recorded it right then and there. the days after, listening to it, trying to find words to come up with a subject, for some reason "Kite yo pale" was stuck in that part where it's at in the song; so a cousin of mine (Lesly Duret) suggested I write around that, so I did. It wasn't something I was experiencing at the moment but its something I had been through and as I said, I know a lot of people that had gone through it.

So while working on the T-Vice album, Powersurge asked if the guys would be interested in this type of song cause as we know, its not a typical T-Vice beat. So he sent the beat to the guys, without my vocals, they seemed really interested to do something different, new, so they said they wouldn't mind working on it. when I got to the studio that day, i told Reynaldo to put the beat on cause I had wrote something on it already. i started singing on the beat and that was it... they were like "ket, sa gen yon lot flavor net... So you have it all written and all, ok next song". when the time came, Rey, Berto, Powersurge put their touches in and the song was done.

Sometimes its true that people are right and you should listen, your making a mistake and especially "granmoun toujou gen rezon" (lol) but sometimes THEY are wrong and if you believe in the relationship you have, as it says in the song, its "Toi et Moi" against the world. But above all, a relationship is between "YOU and I", there's not suppose to be "and the rest of US", only YOU know what you want and need, if the person next to you is who you FEEL should be there than no one else can tell you different.

As you can see, we've added some stuff to the Live interpretation for all you REAL kompa lovers... so come check us out when were playing, bouk senturonw ap klere nan muzik sa kanmem Wink

Big thanks to POWERSURGE and of-course T-Vice for letting me showcase what i can do vocally and also what i can do when it comes to composing on this album.

Thanks

When haitians are in a relationship, they always have haters.

toujou genon moun ki pa vle relasyon yo mache. always someone getting jealous. zanmi ak fanmi toujou pa vle we yo ansanm.

I mean seriously, isnt there ever a relationship kote everyone is rooting for you to make it!

jeez!

But anyway... nice song. Jam to it all the time!

Shocked Shocked SIWO

It seems like you feel VERY STRONGLY about that subject.....Have you been subjected in your lifetime through that type of thing? So what do you do in the end...DO YOU LISTEN or like the song says do you "KITE YO PALE"?

They know better than to offer their opinion. BE IT BROTHER, MOTHER, FWIEND. I DONT CARE.

Everyone I know has been in a situation like that, it's crazy Laughing Zanmi, fanmi, moun ou pa menm konnen etc.. tout moun net ap hate! Rolling Eyes Laughing

In my experience, it's much harder to deal with when it's coming from your own family members Exclamation U can always ignore that friends / foes and nenpot ki ti engredyan kap bat ko'l but when you live with the person, it's a whole other ball game Exclamation

My sister and I have been through hell and back with my father! No one is ever good enough for his daughters. Li toujou jwenn yon bagay li pa renmen nan ti mesyeu yo and it became his mission to keep whoever we were dating and us apart.. He's in a league all by himself! Laughing Gotta love him tho! Laughing

Very Happy Very Happy KRYSSOU
At the end, what did you do? Did your Dad WIN the battle...or did you "KITE YO PALE" like the song says?

SIWOMIEL....DO YOU on the other hand ever find yourself in the OTHER SHOE; meaning YOU are the one pressuring a friend, a family member (Brother or sister, or cousin) to DROP the person that they are with?

The same question goes to you Kryssou...MAP GADE POUM WE IF YOU LADIES ARE GOING TO BE HONEST

MAP GAD FEINT NOU Laughing Laughing Laughing

I have given my opinion to friends and my brother on the person they are dating.

I will say it again... I have given my opinion.

Only because people tend to see me as a counselor of some sort and they ask for my opinion. And I usually try to be rational about things.

But Im not into the habit of pressuring people to do anything. And even if i may not like someone that my friend is dating, they will never be the wiser. I dont feel it's my place pou'm ap bay moun move jan and all that.

After all my opinion is just that... my opinion.

And once it has been shared, the decision is theirs to make.

Maybe I might become more agressive if my little sister ends up dating a jack ass one day. heck ill take her ass out of the country!

Mwen pa ta ka genti bijoux saa pou'm vinn bay vagabon gaspiye.

My sister and I are complete opposites. She's extremely sensitive and actually cares what people (family and friends) say and I really don't give 2 sh*ts Laughing She never really stood up to my dad; however, she did marry her longtime boyfriend after 10+yrs of dating, long distance etc.. I stood up too my dad far too many times to remember lol. The fact that we have similar personalities doesn't help either. A la fin, mjust bal vag cuz I'm always going to do what I want Laughing I'm the younger / female version of my father so he has no choice but to accept it Razz

I've never really been a hater. If I dont like the person, I'll tell you straight up. If you ask me how I feel about the situation as a whole, I'll be honest. Now si ou deside ret avek li, that's on you. Just dont come crying back to me after cuz mpap peu di'w I told you so Laughing

I like the song.

I'm not big on the zouk thing. It gets a little redundant after a while.

But it's a nice song.

My personal favorite on the album is ou fe'm vole. I looooove the keyboard sound treynaldo used on this song. Puts me in heaven every time.

The song has a beautiful intro, beautiful melody. it lives up to the hype.

Very groovy.

DID I SAY I LOVE THE KEYBOARD SOUND THAT REYNALDO IS USING?

OK.... Just checking.

I love the song! Very Happy

I love the fact that it's something totally different and new! The live version is even better! Mr. Green

Hardcore compas fans might not like the zouk vibe in "Toi et moi" but it's gonna rub off on them sooner or later Razz The crowd goes nuts everytime the guys play this song so it's all good! Wink

Muzik sa a son 10/10! Wink

Patrick Patrick Patrick Razz ti suje sa samble hit close to home for everyone Very Happy

It's very relatable. I happen to value my immediate family's opinion and some close friends as well..take note that I said opinion. They never tell me what to do because they know I do the exact opposite Laughing Laughing but they will let me know if they think a certain individual is a good fit for me or not and I don't really mind that. Truth be told though, mi madre/padre has always been right about the guys my sister or I have dated Cool I'll never tell them that though Laughing Ses jou si tout moun se zanmi yo ye so I don't have to hear anything Laughing

Only if Roberto knew how much mwen tande album saaaaaaaaaaaaa.. HeyHeyHeyyyy... Enfin! Who would've thought. Im actually listening to it now as I type this..

TOI et MOI was my first love on the album..
I have no clue on what they're saying when he starts throwing those FRENCH lines in the mix. All I know is that song had me feeling some type of way... a good mushy mushy type of way! I fudgin love this track. POWER SURGE kicked bounda w this one! I enjoy it very much!.. But it recently took a backseat while Mwen Damou replaced it which is also on heavy heavy heavy heavy rotation.. Smile
