WHY PEOPLE ARE BUYING LESS CD’S AND MORE DOWNLOADS
It’s not too long ago that CD’s were the main platform that we used to listen to music, but with the rapid advancement of technology, what began in the early 90’s as a “Fad” where many young, and tech savvy music lovers began listening to MP3’s and downloadable music on their computer, is now a reality and perhaps a new way of life for most. The entertainment industry is in a tizzy over changing business models. People are moving to downloads – legal and illegal- and away from the original models of purchasing entire disks/ CD’s on the portable format du jour and then find out that there are only 2 or 3 songs maximum that are of interest to the consumer. Well, here is a big secret that the Entertainment Industry seems to have a hard time understanding
What customers REALLY want is : Easy access to music at a reasonable price and it’s that simple.
With new technologies like Apple’s iTunes etc…where one can listen to a minute or so of a given song, before actually purchasing that song, really gives CD’s a major challenge. I personally remembered the days when I used to go out and purchase a given CD, only to find out that there is only one song that I like on the CD, and I had to keep rewinding my CD player to that one song, well, iTunes cleaned that up, I get to sample each song, and I have the option to buy one song without having to commit to the entire album, that in itself is a big change.
In addition, the new MP3 players like “iPods, and all the others, have so many features that makes the use of CD’s not attractive at all, like the capability of storing 30,000 + songs in a pocket size device, that can be played in the car, in the house, used as a walkman, with videos, pictures etc…imagine traveling with about 3,000 of your favorite cds in a bag…Ouch!!!! Well, that’s what we all felt when technology gave us that option with the iPods, just the thought of having your entire music library with you at all times is really next to none, so when you look at all the above factors alone, we can easily see why people are moving towards downloads. However let me provide you with the current numbers,
Sales of CDs in the US have fallen by 20% in the last year, according to research company Nielsen Soundscan.
Eighty-nine million CDs were sold in the first three months of 2007, compared with 112 million during the same period in 2006. The growth in digital music failed to compensate, with album sales dropping by 10% overall. Soundscan counts every 10 downloads as a "digital album" as music fans tend not to buy complete albums online. Around 288 million individual songs were downloaded in the first three months of 2007, up from 242 million in the same period last year.
Fans 'in control' "It comes back to consumers being in complete control of their media experience," meaning that the fans are saying these days to all the recording artists, “ You may spend time putting your songs in special sequence so we can enjoy it, but at the end of the day, I am only going to buy 2 or 3 of your songs that I choose after listening to them, not your entire album” well, that’s the beauty of the new technology, buying more of less…..However, despite the CD decline, the digital market is a long way from overtaking the traditional record store - 90% of all albums are still sold as CDs. So, don’t throw away all your Cds yet, the internet still has some tweaking to do before Cds totally become archaic.
