My car came with a factory installed six disc Nakamichi 600-watt stereo system. I don't want to part with my system, nor do i want any audio shop messing around with my dash. I would like to have MP3 playback, but I am torn as which direction i should go. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You have 2 choices

1. If the deck in you car is a cassette that does the disk changer controls (thats what i have) all you need is a mp3 cassette adapter. Retail stores sell it for $20 bt you can find them at swap meets for about $2-$5 and they do the same thing. (currantly my dad uses one)

2. If your deck is a CD slot with changer control then you can get a wireless transmitter thats plays through you FM radio at an odd frequency not used by stations. Retails for about $20 to $40 or swap meet for $10-$20 (thats what I'm using right now)

New cars and new decks have an audio in jack thats lets you connect your mp3 player to it all you need is a male to male connector they also have mp3 disc capabilities

Guys

You can go to Best buy or Fry's electronics, you'll find an interface device to hook up your MP3 to car stereo. I forgot the name, but it is available.
If you have a tape player, Radio Shack has a tape that you can hoop up your MP3 to. But the quality is not as good.

Good luck

This is what I do, and it's working fine for me. But you will need an external MP3 player for that option.

I downloaded all my songs in my MP3 player (iPod-Zen ect..) then I make use of a FM RADIO TRANSMITTER. You can find them at radio shack, or if you need some good quality transmitter you will have to go to Best Buy or other stores. Or you player (iPod) might have their own transmitter. You wont have to mess around with your dash nor your radio system. You just plug your MP3 player to the transmitter, then the transmitter to the lighter compartment of your car (I dont recall the real name). Then you will have to set up your radio to some station (the transmitter will tell you on which stations), then play your musics straight from your MP3 player and the transmitter will relay it to that particular station. I have been doing this for 6 to 7 months and it's working fine with good sound quality.

I havent travel out of states to test the range of that transmitter, eventhough the manufacturers are claiming it's work every where. But I ask couple friends and they have no problem using it.

Do more reshearch on that option if you interested, but It's working fine for me.

Mine works very good as well I suggest the digital kind for better accuracy of the station IE 88.1

The transmitters can run into problems when a higher frequency is on the channel you are using.

I'm not sure what you're using but if it's an iPod, the best thing to do is to get yourself an iTrip by Griffin Tech, this is the best accessory for iPod.
