lUKE 11:40-42
Lord don't you care that my sister has left me alone to do all the work?...'Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. Only one thing is important, Mary has chosen it.'"
"What had Mary chosen? She had shosen to sit at the feet of Christ. God is more pleased with the quiet attention of a sincere servant...than the hurried service of a sour one."
One migh think that Jesus's rebuke of Martha was unwarranted. After all she was trying to ensure that her Lord and savior was well received in her home. She was being a good hostess, while Mary was acting like the spoiled younger sister.
Through his rebuke of Martha, Jesus reminds us that the important should not crowd out what is most necessary for our spiritual well being...spending time at his feet.
It was important for Martha make sure that Jeus was welcome in her home.
But it was not vital.
It's important to work and take care of our families, pay the bills, take care of elderly sick parents, run errands, see friends, go to school.
But even in the midst of all those things, we should always have our quiet time with God everyday.
What is most striking is that even service to God and for God should not take precedence to our spending time with him.
I remember a time when I would spend my sabbaths in church, visiting sick church members, in choir and group rehearsals, in youth meetings. Before I knew it the day was over and I never even thought about God or my relationship with him.
our ministry is not enough to keep our spiritual lives fed and healthy...only communication with God and meditation on his word can do that.
Do not let the urgent or the important crowd out the vital and necessary. |
