Mathew 8:27
The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
I was doing my bible study last week and the author drew a parallel using this verse that hit me like a ton of bricks.
The study was about the works of Jesus, and how they proved that he indeed was the messiah.
All of chapter 8, exposes Jesus as the great miracle worker that he was.
He healed the man with Leprosy, the servant of the roman ceinturion, Peter's mother-in-Law, and many more according to verse 9.
At nightfall, he gathers his disciples and they get on a small boat, trying to cross over to the other side of town. Jesus was tired so he went to the lower deck to take a nap.
Then came the storm... and the panic... and the disciples frantically ran to Jesus... begging him to help.
The obviously saw in him, someone who could be of some help... especially after all the miracles they had seen him perform.
But they obviously were not ecpecting him to just order the storm to subside... and have it happen instantaneously.
and then came the exclamation of verse 28, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
It means more when you consider that in Jewish culture, storms were seen as a sort of Opposition to Godly powers.
Basically they were astounded that even evil powers obeyed a simple command from this man. "PEACE... BE STILL."
The forces of evil recognize the power of God.
Nature recognize the voice of its creator.
Animals recognize the light of his presence.
But we... the most intelligent of all creation, are the only ones to turn our backs on our maker.
Even after this great miracle and all the ones preceding, the disciples still did not recognize Jesus for who he was, for they asked a question... "WHO IS THIS MAN?"
No one made an affirmative declaration.
And so the story continues with the human race. God created us with intelligence so that we can affirmatively recognize him as God... but instead we use it to question his existence and deny his presence in our lives.
We come up with theories after theories as to how we, along with other marvelous works of creations came into existence.
We com eup with all sorts of mathematical equations tryin gto prove what cannot be proven... that there is no God.
We.. created in his image are the only ones not to recognize our God.
To too many people... Jesus is and always will be... just a great man... maybe the greatest man to ever walk the earth.
But never the person that all of creation recognize him to be: GOD. |
