There was a vibe in the air last night in Westbury, Long Island at CHEZ Mireille. Maybe it was because it was the first time that we had gone there to witness a Compas event, but something was in the air...in a positive way.
OXYGEN NEW YORK has another band that they can keep an eye on, and that they can actually say that the potential is huge. This was our first time seeing OXYGEN play since we had missed the world premiere, and I can honestly say that we had no regrets whatsoever in catching this up and coming group composed of some HMI veterans who have been through the rough waters of the HMI. The group plays like every HMI band should play, which is HAVING FUN ON STAGE. Not only could you see that they were enjoying themselves on the stage, you could see that they were hungry to play in front of a crowd since the last time they had done that was approximately 1 month earlier during their grand premiere.
The musicians such as DABENZ, RIGOR, BLACK EZ, LOBERTHO, Jean Riche (1 Lov) as well as the others seemed like they could not wait to perform. Their songs were tight, and they also implemented some choreography in there (No surprise given that DABENZ is a SHOW BUSINESS singer as well) to keep it interesting. At one point on the hit song "Pa leve Min'w Sou Li", they were joined by the legendary guitar player REGINALD BENJAMIN of System Band fame, now with Nu System. For their last song, they invited GAZZMAN to come up on the stage to do a "GOUYAD" skit after they had everyone in the band do theirs. Gazzman came up and brought with him congas player JIMMY DANGER to do the skit. The manager GARY was satisfied last night with both, the crowd number, as well as the performance put in by his band. GARY....OU GIN JAZZ NAN MIN OU!
DISIP GAZZMAN and DISIP came on and they were on. Given the time that they were given the stage by Oxygen, I believe they only got to perform 3 songs. The song that seems to be picking up steam on the Live circuit for them at the moment is "BOPE PA PAPA". GAZZMAN "turned it on" and brought up the group along with him. The group is playing tighter than ever led by bass player SEXY BEEF and maestro LAPORTE. My only complaint was that we did not get to hear too much of LAPORTE in terms of his guitar grooves/solo like you are used to when attending a DISIP bal. It was our first time seeing DISIP in a long time, and I have to tell you that each and every time that we've seen them, they have improved their LIVE playing. Last night they had the luxury of playing with a full horn section and it sounded good to my ears. Hopefully when DISIP comes around next time, we get a BIGGER DOSE of the group in terms of "time on stage". I thoroughly enjoyed their performance. Great job fellas.
Here are a few PICS of the event .....VIDEOS for both DISIP & OXYGEN will be uploaded on the site later on today. Stay tuned for that.
KM!
